The Dove Prism is a unique image rotator, essentially a truncated version of a right-angle prism. Its most distinctive property is the 2θ rotation: as the prism is rotated by an angle θ around the optical axis, the transmitted image rotates by 2θ. This makes it an indispensable tool for adjusting image orientation in interferometry, astronomy, and high-speed imaging.
Due to its significant glass path and refractive nature, the Dove Prism must be used in collimated light (parallel beams). Light undergoes Total Internal Reflection (TIR) at the base, resulting in an inverted image while maintaining the original optical axis (in-line transmission). We offer Dove Prisms in various sizes and materials, including K9 (N-BK7) and UV Fused Silica, with optional black-painted sides to eliminate stray light.
